TWO-WAY RELATIONSHIPS WITH
OVERSEAS PARTNERS
As markets develop and competition increases, exporters need to look beyond the traditional business of solely
exporting their goods and services. Whilst this may still be possible in some markets in others they need to create a
more productive partnership where both parties contribute their own specific skills. This requires careful thought,
research and planning, but the results can bring benefits in terms of new market access, product development and the
ability to match your competitors cost base.

In addition such working relationships with an overseas partner can bring additional, unexpected benefits which will
enable the partnership to develop far beyond its initial objectives. For example, with the right partner, joint research
can result in new technological advances and markets. This in turn can bring new jobs and investment in both the UK and overseas.
In the past the UK has invested widely abroad and more recently has been very successful in attracting inward investment.
Naturally much of this investment has been through large international companies but increasingly the opportunities are now
presenting themselves for smaller companies, often experienced exporters, to develop longer term, sustainable overseas partnerships.
